What is an Elementary School Counselor

Elementary School Counselors are concerned with the academic, career and life skill development of every student. We work closely with parents, teachers, and administration so that as a team, we can help to provide the best education possible for every student.

The School Counselor's role is one of consulting, coordinating and counseling. We teach classroom guidance lessons that cover a variety of topics. These lessons include topics such as: the importance of following classroom rules and directions, taking responsibility for our actions, learning about various careers, personal safety skills, and respecting similarities and differences of others.

In addition to classroom guidance lessons, skills are also taught in small group settings. We offer a variety of small groups that aim to increase self-awareness, improve academic success and develop problem solving skills while building a positive self-concept. Individual counseling is also available to students (students may be referred by themselves, teachers, parents, or administration).

The Langston Chapel Elementary School Counseling Program also aims to help students through school-wide programs including: Red Ribbon Week, Coffee and Conversation and Career Day.
